After nine nights of devotion to the Divine Mother comes the tenth day: Vijayadashami, the "tenth day of victory". Most people know it as Dussehra, when effigies of Ravana are burned across North India. But for Shakti devotees it has an equally important meaning: it is the day the Mother's victory is celebrated and the Navratri worship is completed.

Two Stories, One Message
The Devi's victory
According to the Devi Mahatmya, the buffalo-demon Mahishasura could not be defeated by the gods. From their combined energies arose Maa Durga, who fought him for nine days and nights and defeated him on the tenth. Navratri honours those nine nights; Vijayadashami celebrates her victory.
Lord Rama's victory
According to tradition, Lord Rama worshipped the Devi before his final battle with Ravana, and was victorious on the day of Vijayadashami. This is why Ramlila performances end with Ravana Dahan, the burning of Ravana's effigy.
Both stories carry the same message: dharma, supported by the Mother's grace, overcomes adharma.

What Vijayadashami Means for Shakti Devotees
For devotees of the Divine Mother, Vijayadashami: - Completes the Navratri sadhana that began with kalash sthapana - Celebrates the Mother's power to protect dharma - Is the day of visarjan, respectfully bidding farewell to the Mother's form worshipped during Navratri - Is the day of parana for those who fasted through Navratri - Is traditionally considered an auspicious day to begin new learning, work or undertakings
For Maa Baglamukhi devotees, it is a day to offer thanks for the Navratri worship and to pray for steadiness and clarity in the months ahead.

The Inner Meaning of "Victory"
The word vijaya means victory, but tradition teaches that the greatest victory is within. The ten heads of Ravana are often explained as ten inner weaknesses:
| Inner weakness | Its opposite quality |
|---|---|
| Kama (desire) | Contentment |
| Krodha (anger) | Calm |
| Lobha (greed) | Generosity |
| Moha (delusion) | Clarity |
| Mada (pride) | Humility |
| Matsarya (envy) | Goodwill |
| Swartha (selfishness) | Service |
| Anyaya (injustice) | Fairness |
| Amanavta (cruelty) | Compassion |
| Ahankara (ego) | Surrender |
For devotees of Maa Baglamukhi, the power of stillness is especially meaningful here: stilling anger, harsh speech and confusion is itself a victory.
